Can AIDC technology help engineer urban renaissance?
How can AIDC technology help the UK’s urban renaissance? According to the recent Cities Outlook 2010 report, published by the Centre for Cities, UK’s cities need significant support to help put them back on track for success. Could the development of intelligent communities offer the way forward?
According to the report, last year’s recession has hit cities hard, and put a decade of urban renaissance on hold. Unemployment has risen sharply, particularly among young people. The cities hit hardest have been those with lowest skills, and employment in exposed sectors. The priority for the next year needs to be to get the UK back on a path to balanced growth and economic resilience. Strengthening cities' roles as centres for business and jobs needs to be based on an understanding of the economic roles of different places.
The concept of the Intelligent City harnesses technology such as RFID and wireless mobile communications to promote communications within city centres and encourage people and businesses to share the information they need to prosper. This brings not only business benefits but also can provide real social benefits as well.
The major cities of the UK and those with strong economies have the potential to drive sustainable growth over the next few years. In the run-up to the General Election, and into the next Government, the role of urban policy to strengthen cities’ role in stimulating employment and growth is likely to be the subject of significant political debate. The AIDC Centre will continue to urge all parties to look at the benefits of harnessing technology for business and social good.
