Local authorities

Local authorities represent a major potential user of AIDC technologies.  This is primarily due to the complex range of responsibilities which local authorities are charged with managing.  They can use AIDC in the form of smartcards to ease access to council services, sports and leisure centres, public transport and in libraries. Traffic signs can be monitored with AIDC technology and underground assets such as pipes and cables can be identified above ground with RFID, thus speeding up roadworks and the resulting traffic jams. Tagged wheelie bins provide management information to make refuse collection more efficient.  AIDC can even be used in anticounterfeiting programmes for works of art on display in council art galleries.

The Centre can advise on the use and application of all AIDC technology, but it is especially dedicated to encouraging the use of smartcards as a powerful force for social inclusion and customer service development.  The Centre is taking a lead in the development of Intelligent Communities and even offers a managed smartcard programme which can provide a fully resourced service for all local authority smartcard needs.

The case studies below show how different AIDC technologies have been applied by different local authorities.  Just click on the link to go to the case study.
